Finn Loxbo – Acoustic Guitar / Directions
Kommun, led by Swedish guitarist Finn Loxbo, resides in the tension between the experience of circular time; an elongated now, and the expectations contained within our linear perception of time. The ensemble explores the tension between the individual’s own lines and the collective meaning-making. Every sound is equally important, concrete in itself, as much a building block as a decoration.
The ensemble collectively improvises phrases that are formed together as a singular element. They are distributed across the ensemble’s instrumentation: acoustic steel-string guitar, piano, double bass, violin, cello and percussion. The phrases are born together and continue on a cyclic journey, folding into themselves. They are constantly moving but also going nowhere.
Kommun started out as a quartet and released the critically acclaimed album Ephemeralds in 2023 on John Chantler’s Fönstret/Edition Festival record label. The ensemble has been on tour and performing concerts around Europe since then. Their rich tonal palette has now been further enriched by Leo Svensson Sander on cello and Anna Lindal on violin, making a divine version of Kommun as a sextet. The new sextet piece Kalpa will be released on Thanatosis in May 2025.
Finn Loxbo is a guitarist with a focus on free improvisation. His music is usually on either side of two dynamic extremes: quiet acoustic or very loud. On the quiet side we find him in his own ensemble Kommun, as a solo act and in collaborations with, for example, Skogen. Examples from the louder side are Kyosaku, Anna Högberg Extended Attack, and previously in bands such as Doglife, Strändernas svall and Fire! Orchestra.
Lisa Ullén is one of Sweden’s most celebrated pianists and composers. A versatile player with a singular musical vision, Ullén has repeatedly proven her ability to imprint her absolute sense for tonal texture on whatever musical context she appears in, whether it is her own solo playing, writing for her own larger ensembles or the vivid contributions she has made to groups such as Anna
Högberg’s Attack, Vilhelm Bromander Iniativ, Festen and more…
Vilhelm Bromander is a bass player and composer with a great curiosity for sound, texture, intonation and timbre. He draws inspiration from a wide variety of genres such as improvised music, free jazz and electronic music as well as his studies of just intonation and dhrupad. In demand across genres, he brings a unique sensitivity to all of the contexts in which he works.
Etienne Nillesen Etienne is currently on the faculty of the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Arnhem (NLD), where he teaches improvisation and drums. His performances blur the boundary between composition and improvisation. Each performance is an act of deep listening—to the instrument, the space, and the moment.
Anna Lindal Performs regularly as soloist, as chamber musician, in experimental theatre and in different groups for free improvisation. Collaborates with a large number of contemporary composers and has had many new compositions dedicated to her. Made several recordings, among others two solo records with works by John Cage and Christian Wolff together with related composers. From 1983 to 2001 concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm
and from 2002 Professor of violin at the Royal college of Music in Stockholm.
Leo Svensson Sander is working in a wide spectrum of music. Started out with classical music but soon found wider inspiration and focused for many years mostly on experimental music in differentforms and Scandinavian folk music. Have participated on a large number of albums and film scores. Writes music for dance,
theatre and film. Groups and collaborations, among others: Time Is a Blind Guide, Namna, Fire! Orchestra, Goran Kajfes, Lena Willemark, Matti Bye Ensemble, Skogen, Gul 3.
