Vannstand er en hyllest til de langsomt pulserende tidevannsskiftningene langs Norskekysten, laget av komponist Maja S.K. Ratkje, med lokale barn som musikere. Verket er inspirert av tidevannets syklus – en levende kraft som er i konstant bevegelse gjennom vær- og klimapåvirkning og månefaser. Ratkje bruker lokale vannstandsmålinger til å lage grafiske partiturer, som tolkes musikalsk av barn i Bergen. For barna innbefatter prosjektet en læringsprosess i å spille partiturer som åpner for improvisasjon og egne valg av toner og klang, og om vannstand generelt. I dag kan vi måle og undersøke havet, og vi ser at menneskenes påvirkning er i ferd med å endre det tilsynelatende evige kretsløpet langs Norskekysten. I Vannstand får barna reflektere rundt og svare musikalsk på denne problematikken.

Den første realiseringen av Vannstand var en lydinstallasjon som ble presentert på Den Norske Opera & Ballett på nyMusikks festival Only Connect 2015. I Bergen har vi gleden av å presentere Vannstand på VilVite, et populærvitenskapelig opplevelses- og læringssenter for teknologi, naturvitenskap og realfag.

Vannstand is a tribute to the slow, pulsating shifting of the tides along the Norwegian coast, created by composer Maja S.K. Ratkje and local children as musicians. The work is inspired by the never ending cycle of the rising and falling tide gauge – a living force kept in constant motion by changes in weather and climate, and the phases of the moon. Ratkje uses local tide measurements to create graphic scores which are interpreted musically by children from Bergen. For the children the project is a learning process on how to read scores that are open to improvisation and their own choices of notes and sounds, and about the tides in general. Today we can measure and research the ocean and we see that mankind’s influence is changing this perpetual cycle along the Norwegian coast. In Vannstand the children have the possibility to reflect on and react musically to this issue.
The first realisation of Vannstand was a sound installation presented at the Norwegian Opera & Ballett during nyMusikk’s festival Only Connect in 2015. In Bergen the installation will be presented at VilVite, a popular scientific experience and learning centre for technology and the natural sciences, especially aimed at schoolchildren and youth.
