SLIGTER BULSINK ENSEMBLE & NATALIE SANDTORV SOLO

Landmark,
Torsdag 19. nov
Kl 21:00

nyMusikk Bergen inviterer deg til en saftig kveld under Bergen Art Book Fair. Her presenterer vi to vokalister med sine helt egenartede uttrykk. Mikrotonalitet ispedd mørk crooning og dronelandskap med splintrende støyutbrudd er bare noen av ingrediensene i disse musikernes repertoar.

Untitled #2 (The Mute) – Sligter Bulsink Ensemble

Jessica Sligter – vocals, composition
Kari Rønnekleiv – violin
Ole-Henrik Moe – violin
Wilbert Bulsink – composition

Vocalist and composer Jessica Sligter (Oslo) works in the challenging end of the pop-spectrum, and releases her third record this winter on Hubro. One of the most exciting young composers in the Netherlands today, Wilbert Bulsink has written for a range of established ensembles.
As their second collaborative work, the composers set out to make the piece ‘Untitled #2 (The Mute)’ and asked Spellemanspriswinners Kari Rønnekleiv and Ole-Henrik Moe to join the ensemble.

‘The Mute’ explores a theme of voicelessness. How a voice is like a home, how travel and voice can be connected, and the way in which a voice can be canceled out or amplified by other sounds. The piece builds a bridge between Bulsink’s microtonal explorations and Sligter’s dark crooning tendencies, which doesn’t seem a stretch at all.

Natalie Sandtorv – voice, electronics

Natalie Sandtorv is releasing her debut solo album «Pieces of Solitude» on the 20thof November. Using a voice with an organic interaction with electronics she expresses distinctive poetic sound art characterized by droning tension and intense abrupt parts.

«Pieces of Solitude» is about the many forms of loneliness in both a positive and negative sense, and is therefore particularly suitable as a solo album.

Natalie explains: «The solo format excites me because it is a very bare and honest format, and one has to create the incentive and energy alone. I am an only child and think it has influenced me a lot as a person and musician. In my years as a student I often felt alone in the music I was doing. I also worked a lot for myself, which can be both frustrating but also liberating, which are key when it comes to emotions in music.» The album is imbued by a dark and melancholy mood with occasional massive and intense segments. The voice, and everything that comes with it, is the focus in an organic interaction with electronics.»

«It is both slow and abrupt. It is very honest and unpolished, despite a lot of electronic effects. I have tried to spread the album equally between droning stretches and intense abrupt parts. I am also interested in the text, and how words and phrases change meaning depending on how and when to say them or break them up.» Says Natalie.
