Ved nærare undersøking av eit rusta jernstykke, vil ein legge merke til rikdomen og nyansane i fargar, tekstur og former som vert avdekka under oksidasjonsprosessen. Støyduoen Rust tek utgangspunkt i denne spontane naturlege venleiken som veks fram i forfallet til menneskeskapte konstruksjonar.

Rust består av Jean-François Laporte og Benjamin Thigpen. Sidan 2013, har duoen utvikla instrument ved bruk av varierte konfigurasjonar av preparerte piezoelektriske element, akustisk feedback, vibrerande objekt og datamaskiner. Instrumenta okkuperer eit område på randen av menneskeleg kontroll – og beheld, trass i det ekstremt raffinerte, naturprosessane sine primitive organiske element.

 «This evening we will perform on all-new instrumental configurations that we have been developing over the past year or so. Following the concert, we will give a presentation of these new instruments, explaining and demonstrating how they work, while also discussing our musical and aesthetic approach – that is, why we chose to build them and to make music in this way.

These configurations consist of numerous «prepared» piezoelectric contact microphones which are manipulated manually in conjunction with various vibrating objects and which are also brought into contact with small speakers and «exciters.» The signals produced in this way pass thru the computer where where the sound is further magnified and enriched. What results are complex fields of short-range acoustic feedback, an immersion in the materiality of sound, direct contact with vibrational energy, a sonic experience that is organic, physical, visceral – at times delicate and subtle, a times overpowering and extreme.»        – Benjamin Thigpen
